What’s the Top 10 Highlights for SMEs from the 2025 Federal Budget?
1) $1.8 billion in energy rebates and $150.00 for each household and small business owner;
2) Instant asset write-off to revert to $1,000 from 1 July 2025 — act before 30 June to maximise the current $20,000 threshold available;
3) 1.5 million sole traders to benefit from tax cuts, improving cash flow and reinvestment capacity;
4) $20M to support Aussie producers through the Buy Australian Campaign;
5) Beer excise paused and rebates for alcoholic beverage manufacturers, saving this sector around $165M;
6) $2.9M to support fresh produce suppliers under the mandatory food and grocery code;
7) Up to $10K in apprenticeship funding, plus additional hiring incentives for the various construction trades;
8) National licensing for electricians, which should improve cross-border labour mobility;
9) Empowering First Nations businesses through procurement funding and mentoring;
10) $7.1M to strengthen the enforcement of the franchising code.
Whilst the budget has delivered some ‘minor’ positive aspects for small and medium business owners, the wider business community believes that such fell well short of what’s required to actually assist the thousands of small businesses that are already struggling with cost pressures as a result of the unrelenting rise in insurance premiums, the burden of utility bills, the cost of materials, wages and fuel, as well as various ‘other’ inflationary pressures which need to be managed!
